Tilly, a black stray dog, with a wire snare tight around her hind leg.
Tilly was lucky—we reached her in time to save her leg.

The hidden threat in Taiwan's mountains

Illegal wire snares are set across Taiwan's hillsides and farmland. They are cheap, legal to buy and impossible to aim. Whatever walks into one—a stray dog, a cat, a muntjac—pulls the wire tighter trying to get free.

Taiwan's Ministry of Agriculture counted 141,584 free-roaming dogs in its 2024 national survey. 140 of the dogs in our care are trap or snare amputees.

We rescue them, we treat them, and we care for them for life.

How a rescue actually works

Dalia—before and after

Dalia came to us with advanced skin disease and two paws already lost to snares. Drag the slider. The second photograph was taken in her adoptive home.

Dalia after rescue: healthy and well-coated, sitting on a sofa with her adoptive family.
Dalia before rescue: emaciated, with severe hair loss, lying on concrete.

Their stories

Ringa, a brindle mixed-breed dog, standing on a grassy path

Ringa

Picked up as a puppy alongside his mother and littermates. All of them came through it. Ringa is still with us and still the loudest.

Mel, a white and tabby cat, lying indoors

Mel

Left paralysed after an attack. She rebuilt her confidence over months and now runs the room she lives in.

Ocean, a tan mixed-breed dog, lying on grass

Ocean

Lost three paws to snares. He gets around the sanctuary on what is left, and he does it at speed.

Where your money goes

What your donations do

Every charity tells you that all of your gift reaches the animals. It never quite does, for anyone, and we would rather show you the split than claim otherwise.

StrayKind UK exists to fund the rescue and sanctuary work in Taiwan, so this is a breakdown of that operation—the thing your donation actually pays for.

Figures cover January to June 2026, converted from New Taiwan dollars at a fixed rate of NT$40 to the pound and rounded down.

71% goes directly on the animals

  • 24.5% Veterinary care and medicines
  • 31% Sanctuary staff
  • 14.5% Running the three sanctuaries
  • 1% Rescue vehicles and fuel

29% runs the charity and raises the next donation

  • 18.2% Advertising that brings donors in
  • 5.7% Office costs, professional fees, bank charges
  • 5.1% Admin and fundraising staff
The largest single cost outside animal care is advertising. Over those six months it cost around £177,000 and brought in around £978,000 of donations—about £5.50 raised for every £1 spent. That is why we spend it, and it is why we show it to you rather than bury it.

Regular giving

Give monthly

A one-off gift pays a bill that has already arrived. A monthly gift lets us say yes to an animal before we know what the treatment will cost—which is the only way anything caught in a snare gets reached in time.

  • Cancel any time, in two clicks, no questions asked
  • A short update each month: real animals, named, with outcomes
  • We are applying for Gift Aid now. Once HMRC approves it, a UK taxpayer's gift is worth 25% more at no cost to you
